The University Theater Company

Uno spettacolo di Binario di Scambio

Binario di Scambio, since 2014 the Theater Company of the University of Florence, is a specific experimental educational and scientific activity for university students. Founded in the academic year 2006-2007 by Teresa Megale, professor of Performing Arts, it is a permanent creative workshop, open to all enrolled students, which brings together students of different ages and experiences in order to make the most of their artistic inclinations and talents.

The Company has taken the name 'Binario di Scambio' (Exchange Track) to emphasize how doing theater is one of the best ways to stimulate curiosity, experiment, train, conceive, invent, and exchange ideas. The experience involves all aspects of the performing arts: from the idea to the representation, from artistic invention to the production and distribution phases, from communication to documentation. Over the years it has been guided by prominent directors: Cristina Pezzoli, Alessio Pizzech, Fabio Cocifoglia, Stefania Stefanin.

Binario di Scambio has aroused great interest in the Tuscan and national territory. It collaborates with the Teatro della Pergola, the Teatro Metastasio, the Volterra International Festival of Roman Theater, the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, the Palazzo Pretorio Museum in Prato, Officina Giovani - Cultural Workshops of the Municipality of Prato, Toscana Spettacolo Foundation, Creativity Festival, Firenze dei Teatri, Rai-Radio 3. It participates in the ceremonies and initiatives promoted by the University.

It has to its credit numerous cultural projects. Among these, the video-archive Officina delle Voci_Atelier della creazione giovanile, created with an institutional network with the Municipality of Prato as the lead partner, and financed, following a public call for proposals, by the Department for Youth Policies and the RI_NASCITE project at Officina Giovani-Cultural Workshops, carried out in 2012-2013 together with the Municipality of Prato, promoted and supported by the Department of Youth-Presidency of the Council of Ministers and ANCI. The report was included in the volume Contesti teatrali universitari, preface by Rector Alberto Tesi, edited by Teresa Megale with the collaboration of Antonia Liberto (Firenze University Press, Florence, 2014).

The University Theater Company was awarded in 2008 by UNIVERSOTEATRO-International University Theater Festival of Benevento, directed by Ugo Gregoretti, for the performance A ferro e fuoco, based on Antonio Gramsci's Letters from Prison. In 2014 it was awarded the national 'Cultura di Gestione' Prize, promoted by Federculture for the RI_NASCITE project.
